"Our world is changing, has changed, " a booming voice says at the start of the new footage. "Gifted with abilities far beyond the ordinary," the voice continues as a montage runs featuring snippets of scenes from Hargreeves Home for Wayward Boys, a subway station, when at last we see Elliot Page's Viktor, taking a call at a bar, as more snippets of the lives of the familiar crew appear.

"I give you the inaugural class of The Umbrella Academy." the voice announces at last, as Viktor, Number Five, Luther, and the rest of the cast annoyingly take a group photo.

The rest of the trailer sees the group go through various dangerous scenarios, but sticking together, even in the worst of it, just like the family they have become.

The Umbrella Academy’s debut season premiered in 2019. The first ten episodes of the show saw the estranged superpowered siblings reunite for their adoptive father’s funeral and attempt to prevent the apocalypse. 2020’s season two saw the siblings scattered throughout the early 1960s as they reconvened to halt John F. Kennedy’s assassination. 2022’s season three brought the family back to the present day, but in an alternate timeline that places them in conflict with the villainous Sparrow Academy.

Creator Steve Blackman teased timeline wonkiness in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Fans may remember that at the end of season 3, Hargreeves wasn't able to finish programming the Universe Machine, and Allison still pressed the button anyway,” Blackman said. “So we're definitely in an altered version of our now. We're back to the time period they’ve always wanted to get back to! At least they start in the right year, but we know that something isn't right. My little teaser is clearly Hargreeves didn't finish what he needed to do before Alison pressed the button, so that is going to have repercussions to their timeline."

Blackman was fascinated by the idea of stripping superpowers away from the central family. “What does that do to you? Not only as an individual, but what is the family dynamic when suddenly they find themselves normal?” he said. “I think it's a challenge for all of them. What might've brought them together initially is the fact that, as a dysfunctional family, they found some connection in their abilities. With those superpowers stripped away, who are they as a family?”
