Hong Kong reporter blasted for defending slapper at an MTR station

A TVB reporter who was assaulted at Sha Tin MTR Station while filming a protest has since come under fire from Hong Kong netizens for defending her slapper.

A video from Truth Media Hong Kong capturing the incident was uploaded onto Youtube.

Chan Ka-yan, 30, was filming a protest against the ban on large objects on the MTR when she was slapped by a protestor. The protestor swatted her phone to the ground.

Displaying her press card, Chan then called out, “Where’s my phone? It is very important, I’m a reporter.”

Although the reporter tried to keep things civil, things quickly got out of hand when the crowd turned against the slapper. Surrounding the 39-year old woman, they accused her of hitting a reporter and shouted at her to go back to mainland China in foul language.

The slapper responded by saying in accented Cantonese, “You are a Hongkonger, I am a Hongkonger too.”

Against the wishes of the crowd, the reporter defended her slapper, arguing that as the victim she should have the say on how the woman is dealt with. She then led the slapper towards MTR staff, who escorted them both away from the scene.

Since the incident, Chan Ka-yan has been blasted by Hong Kong netizens on her Facebook page for supporting the slapper, with some even labeling her as a "traitor" to Hong Kong.
