I hope Singaporeans will give Pritam Singh a chance: Low Thia Khiang
Former Workers’ Party (WP) chief and Aljunied GRC Member of Parliament Low Thia Khiang said on Wednesday (11 April) that he hopes Singaporeans will give his successor Pritam Singh a chance as party’s new leader.
“It’s often like that at the beginning. It takes time,” said Low in Mandarin while addressing a reporter’s point that some residents may not be familiar with Singh, who is a fellow MP for the constituency.
“So as I’ve said before, I hope that residents and Singaporeans will give him time, give him a chance… I feel that this is a very important process.”
Low was speaking to reporters at his first Meet-the-People Session – held at Block 713 Bedok Reservoir Road – since stepping down as the WP’s secretary-general, a role he had filled since 2001. Singh was elected unopposed as WP chief on Sunday, a move which Low said completes the party’s leadership renewal process.
But the 61-year-old would not be drawn on questions about his new role in the party, why he had chosen to remain in the party’s central executive council and whether he would become a Minister Mentor-like figure in the vein of the late former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew.
“It’s premature now to discuss these things. I think these questions can be answered later on. Everyone will be able to see and know. I don’t need to speculate on what will happen,” said Low.
He added, “I do have plans but we should only discuss them at the next election. It is still too early to judge now.”
