The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has planned for an hour-long show with fireworks to usher in the new year during the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2019 event on New Year’s Eve.

In a media announcement on Wednesday (5 December), it said that the multi-sensory fireworks musical around the bay – part of the Star Island Singapore countdown production by Japanese entertainment group Avex – will have a combination of fireworks and pyrotechnics, lights, 3D surround sound and performances by acts such as Taiko drummers, dancers and fire performers.

To enjoy the fireworks at The Float@Marina Bay – where there will also be fringe activities such as a food and beverage marketplace, roving performances and family-friendly events – the public can purchase tickets via Star Island.

Variety events around Marina Bay and Civic District

The extended firework display is part of a variety of events taking place around Marina Bay and the Civic District on 31 December from early evening until past midnight. There will be light projection shows on key landmarks around the bay, a free countdown concert by Mediacorp, outdoor performances at the Esplanade Theatres by the Bay, food delights at Marina Bay Sands and even a carnival at the Bayfront Event Space.

Roads around the Padang – St Andrew’s Road, part of Fullerton Road and the stretch of Connaught Drive between Esplanade Park and The Padang – will be closed to traffic from 4pm on 31 December until 5am the next morning, so that the public can enjoy activities such as movie screenings, live performances, bazaars and salsa dancing around the Civic District.

The Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2019 will also feature the Build a Dream initiative, a collective effort to support the less fortunate in fulfilling their dreams and personal development. Artwork by students and beneficiaries of local schools and welfare organisations will be transformed into a series of nightly light projections on the facades of key landmarks around Marina Bay such as the Fullerton Hotel Singapore from 26 to 31 December.

URA CEO Lim Eng Hwee said, “The Marina Bay Singapore Countdown has been a signature countdown event that draws both locals and overseas visitors, as it offers a unique cityscape and vibrant atmosphere for everyone to enjoy the New Year’s Eve.

“As we come together to celebrate the New Year and enjoy the activities that have been lined up, we hope that the public will also be inspired to play a part in helping the less privileged through the Build a Dream initiative.”

Members of the public who wish to help the talented youths from these schools and welfare
organisations fulfil their dreams and aspirations can do so via the Marina Bay Countdown website.

Celebrations around the bay

Meanwhile at The Promontory, Mediacorp’s Let’s Celebrate 2019 countdown show will be hosted by Chua En Lai and Sonia Chew, featuring Mediacorp artistes and local acts as they usher in the New Year. Entry is free and starts from 7pm.

At the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza, there will be a Food Truck Fest featuring a line-up of modern local food amid food trucks, caravans and Kombi vans.

The Prudential Marina Bay Carnival, which will be held for a second straight year at the Bayfront Event Space, features 50 rides and games, as well as new elements such as food challenges and a dance competition.

Finally, the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre will feature six different performances with acts by Nick Zavior, Amni Musfirah, Bloco Singapura and NovoBloco, hosted by Timothy Nga.
