Season two picks up shortly after the events of the first season's dramatic finale which saw the death of a huge character.

The follow-up season has received largely positive reviews from critics, with Cooke's performance praised by some and the promise of blood, sex and complex relationships confirmed.

Here's a round-up of what reviewers have been saying:

Digital Spy

"This Game of Thrones spin-off is no one-trick pony – season two is shaping up to be every bit as enthralling. The show takes a measured approach to its pacing, not throwing us into battle but deliberately stacking the deck so that things unfold with purpose.

"It doesn't feel slow, but if you were expecting to be launched straight onto the field of combat you may need to adjust your expectations."

Empire Magazine

"Above all else, House of the Dragon remains a spiky, acidic human drama; an astute, timely and well-performed study of the way power and wisdom are so often mutually exclusive."

The Independent

"While it takes a few episodes for House of the Dragon to crescendo into the sort of grand, violent spectacle that the series does better than pretty much anything else on TV, there are enough nuggets of incident... to satisfy viewers’ bloodlust."

The Daily Telegraph

"Summer is coming, and for those eager for an alternative to sunburn, football and queues at the airport, House of the Dragon has all you could require for a roaring good time."

Evening Standard

"We spend more time with each of the main characters -- freed from the timehopping constraints of season one -- and as such we get a deeper, more satisfying dive into them. Cooke, in particular, is great as Alicent."

The New York Post

"House of the Dragon has some Vhagar-sized flaws, but it remains a bloody good time and still feels like Event Television."

House of the Dragon season two will debut on June 16 in the US on HBO and Max, and on June 17 in UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW. Season one is available to stream now on HBO, Sky Atlantic and NOW.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
