Shaw family scion Howard Shaw Chai Li, 46, has been sentenced to eight weeks’ jail for his third drink driving offence in 10 years, after he pleaded guilty to the offence on Monday (25 May).

The grandson of Runme Shaw, the founder of pioneering Asian film distributor and cinema operator Shaw Organisation, was also fined $10,000 and disqualified from driving for eight years.

In 1997 and 2006, Shaw was also convicted of drink driving. For his first offence, he was fined $3,000 and disqualified from driving for two years. In 2006, he was jailed for a week, fined $8,000 and disqualified from driving for four years.

On 31 January, 2017, at around 3.45am, Shaw was stopped while driving along Whitley Road. He was found to have 88 microgrammes (mcg) of alcohol in 100ml of breath, more than double the prescribed limit of 35mcg.

Shaw was formerly executive director of the Singapore Environment Council. In 2012, he served several weeks in jail after being sentenced for having paid sex with a minor. He was one of dozens of men caught in the prostitution scandal.

Repeat drink driving offenders can be jailed for up to three years and fined up to $30,000.
