Huge Success for Joan Cornellà’s Exhibition, But Disappointing For Fans
After weeks of great anticipation and excitement, Joan Cornellà’s debut exhibition opened right here in Singapore last night. Held at Far Out! in the heart of Tanjong Katong, the exhibition was a huge success with a great turn out. By the opening hour, the entire space was filled and a long queue was still going strong as more fans turned up to enter the space.
After all, the opening night was completely sold out. Why wouldn’t it be when this popular Spanish artist is finally here on our shores after great demand over the years?
It was a rather intimate setting since the space functioned as a cube. Various of his art works dressed each wall and a video projection was screened as well. Several individual prints were also hung from the ceiling. With the white coloured walls, Cornellà’s works really stood out and it was so satisfying to view how aesthetically pleasing everything was.
However, it was a pity that the space seemed unable to house the number of tickets sold. Sure, everyone managed to fit inside eventually but the long line of trying to get Cornellà’s signature just took up most of the walking area. Besides making the space stuffy and too crowded to breathe, the artworks on walls were thoroughly blocked.
It was also really ironic that it is an exhibition to celebrate the artist’s works but most of them went ignored. Most attendees just bought the book, queued for a signature and left the exhibition.
It was nearly impossible to take time to enjoy each piece chosen to be featured before someone accidentally shoved you away or asked if you were in the queue (and if you are not, to please move).
Perhaps regulating the traffic flow might have given a better experience? It would have given the chance for fans to take a walk around to view the works, before or after getting a signature.
Or maybe, visiting the exhibition during its opening hours some other day might have been more pleasant.

The exhibition will be running from now until 3rd July 2016.
