Illegal cough syrup manufacturing lab in HDB flat raided, $40,000 in products seized

A Bishan flat that was being used to illegally manufacture cough syrup and other medications was raided by police on Thursday (6 September), resulting in the seizure of some $40,000 in illegal cough syrup and medicines.

This followed a joint enforcement operation on the same day by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) and officers from the Bedok Police Division in the vicinity of Geylang Road, the police said in a statement on Friday.

A 57-year-old man who was caught supplying cough syrup, sleeping pills and painkillers during the operation then led the police to his Sin Ming Road flat, where more than 100 litres of illegally manufactured cough syrup and 1,400 tablets of assorted medicines were seized.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the man had used his home kitchen to manufacture the cough syrup before supplying them to a street peddler.

Another 42-year-old man, suspected to be involved in the illegal supply of these medicines, was also detained. Both men are currently assisting HSA with investigations for the import, manufacture and supply of illegal medicines.

Anyone caught importing, manufacturing and/or supplying of illegal health products is liable on conviction to an imprisonment term for up to two years and/or fined up to $50,000.
