Indonesia repatriates former US policeman over alleged murder

Vontrey Clark (C), a former US policeman, is escorted by Indonesian police from a holding cell in Denpasar to Ngurah Rai international airport as he is deported from the resort island of Bali on September 2, 2015

A former Texas policeman arrested for alleged involvement in the murder of his pregnant girlfriend was flown back to the United States from Indonesia Wednesday, an official said. Vontrey Clark, a former Austin policeman, was taken from his cell in Bali and escorted by police to the airport, an immigration official at Bali's international terminal told AFP. "The departure went well," Muhammad Saleh, the official, said without elaborating. Clark had been behind bars on the resort island for a month following his arrest in July. He was detained after Interpol, acting on a request from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, issued a red notice for his arrest. The secretary of Interpol's national central bureau for Indonesia, Brigadier-General Amhar Azeth, said a team of FBI agents arrived on a chartered flight in Bali on Tuesday before Clark's transfer. Indonesia and the United States do not have an extradition agreement, but special arrangements can be made if a request is formally submitted. US media reported that Clark was under investigation for alleged ties to the death of Samantha Dean, a police counsellor, in February. Dean's body was found with three gunshot wounds to the head behind a vacant shopping centre on February 4, local newspaper The Austin Chronicle reported. Clark arrived in Indonesia on July 18, Indonesia police records show. He was arrested about a fortnight later.
