Indonesian AI platform for natural language processing Bahasa.ai gets seed funding from East Ventures
Bahasa.ai announced today that it has received an undisclosed amount of seed funding from East Ventures
Jakarta-based Bahasa.ai, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) service company for processing Indonesian language to make it more relevant and contextual has officially received a seed funding from East Ventures. Bahasa.ai’s mission is to build the most robust NLP/NLU (Natural Language Processing/Understanding) in order to help businesses execute their chatbot strategy.
The unique AI service relies on technology and design to make Bahasa.ai work.

From the technology side, the company’s challenge is to make all the slang words and complicated grammatical structures mapped. To overcome this, Bahasa.ai is using a crawler engine that continues to learn the way people use the Indonesian language on social media.
For semantically repetitive words, the company’s method is to map the engine in a way that similar words in Indonesian like “Aku”, “Saya”, and “Gue” — which in English translates to “I” or “me” — is recognized based on its context.
“From design perspective, Bahasa.ai stresses on the design framework that allows chatbot to contribute to client’s business in a profitable way. Both our company’s technology and design should aim to answer our customer needs,” Bahasa.ai CEO Hokiman Kurniawan.

Using an intuitive dashboard, the company claims to be able to provide transaction process and address customer issues more seamlessly using Bahasa Indonesia. Furthermore, the dashboard also provides business analytics to track chatbot performance.
According to Melisa Irene, Principal of East Ventures, the funding for Bahasa.ai is to support the untapped opportunity for NLP/NLU to navigate over 700 dialects spoken with Indonesian language. Many variations of slang, spellings, and abbreviations both in verbal and writing are waiting to be explored with the right, Indonesian market-fit approach.
In the future, the company — which has three engineers as the founders — plans to aim for the machine to be able to speak the language well.
