Indonesian police shoot dead two terror suspects

Indonesian police killed two suspected terrorists in a raid on the outskirts of Jakarta, a force spokesman said, less than two weeks after officers shot dead five suspects on the resort island of Bali. "The suspects tried to escape with a gun, triggering a shootout with the police who shot the two instantly," national police spokesman Saud Usman Nasution told AFP on Friday. The raid took place at a rented house on the outskirts of the capital at 3:30 am (2030GMT), with anti-terror police confiscating a revolver, explosive materials, several books about jihad and documents outlining a bank robbery. "We're still investigating whether they are linked to terror networks," the police spokesman said. "The two are also suspects in the stabbing and shooting of a traffic police officer." The incident came less than two weeks after a counter-terrorism squad gunned down five suspects in two raids on the popular tourist island of Bali. Police suspected that group was planning a bank robbery to finance several terror attacks. Muslim-majority Indonesia has been rocked by a series of attacks staged by regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah in recent years, including the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people. The JI network has been weakened since anti-terror police killed some of its most prominent figures in bloody raids.
