ITE student gets probation for taking 27 upskirt videos at shopping malls
SINGAPORE — A tertiary student who took multiple upskirt videos at several shopping malls over four months was on Thursday (31 October) sentenced to 21 months’ probation.
Heng Zhi Sheng, 20, pleaded guilty to one charge of intruding on the privacy of a woman.
On 22 October last year, Heng, who was studying for a Higher National Institute of Technical Education Certificate, was caught red-handed at Velocity at Novena Square.
He saw a woman in a red dress and felt attracted to her. So he followed her as she went up an escalator from the first floor to the second floor.
Heng stood one step below the victim, enabled the video function of his phone and positioned it directly under her dress with the camera facing upwards.
The victim walked away after alighting the escalator, not knowing that her privacy had been intruded upon. Her identity could not be established.
A 51-year-old man saw what Heng did and followed him. The eyewitness later detained the perpetrator at the first floor of the shopping centre and called the police.
A forensic analysis of Heng’s phone found 27 upskirt videos of unknown females. Heng admitted that he took the videos between 1 July and 22 October last year at Hillion Mall, Lot One, Velocity and Jem.
As part of his sentence, Heng has to remain indoors from 10pm till 6am and undergo psychological intervention. He is also banned from using devices with camera or recording functions, unless assessed suitable to do so by a psychologist.
His parents paid a $5,000 bond to ensure his good behaviour during the probation period.
The maximum punishment for insulting the modesty of a woman or intruding upon her privacy is up to one year in jail and a fine.
