Jailed: Woman made above $2,000 in Foodpanda orders using ex-boss' credit card details
SINGAPORE — After storing her former employer’s credit card details on her Foodpanda app, a woman bought more than $2,200 worth of food within two months without authorisation.
Lin Qian Dai Lin, 41, was jailed for five months’ on Tuesday (12 January), after she pleaded guilty to one count of cheating by deceiving Foodpanda into believing that a total of 73 food orders had been ordered by her ex-boss.
Lin had been the personal assistant to a female chief executive officer from 5 April 2017 to 15 February 2018 before leaving the company. While a personal assistant, Lin made official and personal purchases for her boss, including food orders from Foodpanda. As part of her duties, she stored her boss’ credit card details in the app on her own mobile phone.
She did not delete the credit card details from her mobile phone’s app even after she left the company.
She realised this after placing an order for food through Foodpanda on 7 July 2019, and mistakenly selecting her former boss’ credit card as a mode of payment instead of her own credit card.
“When she realised that her credit card had not been charged, and that her act went undetected, the accused became greedy and decided to use the (former boss’) credit card as a mode of payment for her future orders from Foodpanda instead of her own,” Deputy Public Prosecutor Rebecca Wong told the court.
Between 13 July and 7 September 2019, Lin made 73 food orders, worth $2,285.07, through Foodpanda. She made orders from restaurants such as PastaMania, Häagen-Dazs, Sheng Kee Pau, Rasheed's Seafood, Eighteen Chefs and MOS Burger, amongst others.
Lin made a total of $1,142 in restitution to Foodpanda.
For cheating, Lin could have been jailed up to 10 years, and fined.
