Jason George Set to Return as Series Regular on “Grey’s Anatomy ”Following “Station 19” Ending

George previously teased there may have been "conversations" about his potential return to the ABC medical drama

Ben Warren is coming back to Grey's Anatomy.

PEOPLE can confirm that Jason George — who plays the doctor-turned-firefighter — is set to return to the hit ABC medical drama as a series regular for the show’s upcoming 21st season following the end of Station 19.

Fans were first introduced to Ben when he was a first surgical resident at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in season 6. He later married Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and made guest appearances on the series while also starring on Station 19 for seven seasons.

Deadline was first to report the news of George’s return to the series.

In the finale of Station 19, Ben admitted he was ready to head back to the O.R. and finish his surgical residency after mulling his future as firefighter throughout the season.

George, 52, also teased the possibility of a return to Grey’s Anatomy last month.

“I like to think that there’s still a Ben-Bailey, or Benley, story to tell,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think that’s a possibility. There may be conversations.”

News of George’s return comes two months after ABC announced Grey's Anatomy was renewed for season 21, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama and the network’s longest-running primetime scripted series.

“Push (twenty) one of epi! 😉 #GreysAnatomy will be coming back for another season on ABC!” the show’s official Instagram page shared in a post.

Creator Shonda Rhimes also celebrated the news on Instagram.

“This picture was taken in 2015,” she shared of a throwback photo of the cast during the celebration for their 250th episode. “To still be on your screens, in your living rooms, and in your hearts almost ten years later - words cannot express my gratitude.”

“Grey’s was something I made up 20+ years ago, and I am so incredibly proud that it’s been picked up for its 21st season,” she continued. “This honestly could not be possible without you guys..caring about the stories I tell, the talented cast, writers, and crew. Wow.”
