Julie Tan went snowboarding after her breakup, inspired by filming Good Goodbye to step out of her comfort zone; had never planned such trips with ex

The Singapore actress, who shaved her head for the film, will also be keeping the look for a while.

Her ex can’t snowboard, so while they were dating, local actress Julie Tan didn’t plan trips around it. When they broke up last year, the first thing she decided to do was to go on a snowboarding trip.

“I didn’t realise I was suppressing it. Like, I really wanted a trip around that but because he couldn’t, then I’d be like, ‘It’s okay,’” the 31-year-old told Yahoo Southeast Asia in an interview for the local film Good Goodbye.

Going on the snowboarding trip was her way of stepping outside her comfort zone, as she went with friends “I barely knew”. Tan attributed this leap of faith to the film, which inspired her to be more “daring”.

She said, “That's my first experience of going on holiday with new people. I think that that is me stepping out of my comfort zone and that whole experience was very rewarding.

“I think from now onwards, I always want to be more open, and then to really go with the flow. Like you trust that there's a path for you, there’s people you’re going to meet, and then just go with the flow.

“A lot of times, we say we want to go with the flow, but a lot of times we're just afraid to do so because to fully go with the flow, it means that you really [have to] trust in the unknown, the leap of faith. And to take the leap of faith is actually one of the scariest things to do.”

Tan added that she has reached a point in her life where she doesn’t want to have regrets when she looks back on her life.

Though she pointed out that she has taken chances in the past - such as leaving Mediacorp - she felt that she “took a step back” after COVID, adding that the relationship with her ex also had her feeling “insecure”.

She shared, “During my relationship, I was not like myself. I was hiding. Because I didn't feel good about myself… [But] I came out of it. I think it was a journey that many people have experienced and will go through.”

Keeping her shaved head

In Good Goodbye, Tan plays a social worker, who is also a huge romantic and finds love while battling cancer. She also shaved her head for the role and previously said it makes her feel more like the “original Julie Tan”.

So will she be keeping her new ‘do then?

Well, she will for the foreseeable future, due to her work commitments. For starters, she has a fundraising partnership with the Children’s Cancer Foundation, and she’s also a Hair for Hope ambassador.

And, she might have a project in the later half of the year and she was told that the team likes her look.

On a personal front, Tan confessed that it’s “one less problem”.

She added, “If I want long hair, I can get a wig. I can go for different looks some more, right? For now, I'm very comfortable being like this.”

Good Goodbye is an anthology film about palliative care, and it stars Tosh Rock, Andie Chen, Shane Pow, Aster Yeow, Yang Shibin, and Teo Ser Lee. It is now showing in cinemas.
