Kallang River Gets A New Lease Of Life

Kallang River Gets A New Lease Of Life
The Urban Redevelopment Authority revealed that both public and private housing will be introduced in precincts along the Kallang River.

This comes as the government targets to have over 90 percent of households within walking distance to a park under its 2019 Draft Master Plan.

Singapore’s longest river, Kallang River is set to be revitalised with the introduction of new homes, work places, recreation and community spaces along the waterfront.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority revealed that both public and private housing “will be introduced in precincts along the river”.

This comes as the government targets to have over 90 percent of households within walking distance to a park under its 2019 Draft Master Plan.

The Kallang Industrial Estate, for instance, will be transformed into a mixed-use precinct, while Kampong Bugis is envisioned to become a residential and recreational precinct supporting active mobility and environmental sustainability.

The Kallang Riverside Park, on the other hand, will be transformed into a waterfront park.

And with the Active Beautiful, Clean (ABC) Waters Programme improvements from Bishan Road to Braddell Road set to be completed in the second quarter of 2019, residents can look forward to more rest areas, cantilevered decks as well as a pavilion within the waterfront.

“In the longer-term, the larger area around Kallang Riverside will be developed into a mixed-use lifestyle hub. In the interim, the conserved old Kallang Airport area will first be made available for a variety of sports, leisure and community uses.”

Plans for infrastructure improvements will also be carried out from next year along the Kallang River – which is currently divided by major expressways and roads – to connect towns and encourage walking and cycling.

The works will consist of improved or new crossings at strategic locations such as CTE, PIE, Kallang Bahru, Serangoon-Bendeemer, Sims Avenue and Upper Boon Keng.

A new circular walking and cycling loop, which traces Kallang Airport’s original circular airfield, will also be introduced to connect the waterfront across Stadium Boulevard and Nicoll Highway.

Meanwhile, more sporting and community facilities will be introduced at the ‘Kallang Alive!’ Sports Hub area to “strengthen its standing as an inclusive sporting precinct”.

The Jalan Benaan Kapal waterfront will also feature an active community space, with park connectors, lookout points and a multi-generational ‘enabling’ gym.

Given the government’s transformation plans for Kallang River, savvy buyers flocked to acquire units at Selangor Dredging Board’s latest development project within the area.

Jui Residences saw over 40 percent of its units snapped up to date, with prices starting from $1,650 per sq ft (psf).
