Kate Middleton’s Famous See-Through Dress Wasn’t Actually a Dress at All—It Was a Skirt
Remember the mesh dress that Kate Middleton wore during a 2002 fashion show, which ultimately kicked off her romance with Prince William? Well, we have some major news about the now-iconic garment: It was actually a skirt.
Fashion expert and auctioneer Kerry Taylor recently discussed the charity event in an interview with Us Weekly and revealed that the mesh number wasn’t supposed to be worn as a dress.
“It was meant to be a skirt actually,” Taylor said. “And she kind of yanked it up and wore it as a dress. You know, she had a great figure, so yeah, she definitely caught Prince William’s eye that night and the rest is history.”
We trust Taylor’s expertise, especially since her company, Kerry Taylor Auctions, obtained the dress—er, we mean, skirt—for the 2011 Passion For Fashion Auction at La Galleria in London (pictured below).
In the background, Middleton can be seen wearing the mesh ensemble, which features a blue ruffle along the neckline (formerly known as the waistband.) She paired the frock with what appears to be a black bra and underwear. #Scandalous
The Duchess of Cambridge originally wore the garment back in 2002 when she volunteered as a model for a charity fashion show at her school, St. Andrew’s University. Prince William paid £200—about $360—to sit front row at the event, and while he was attracted to Middleton, she was dating someone else at the time. When the couple called it quits about a year later, Prince William made his move.
