Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan turned 65 on Friday (8 December) but he restrained his celebratory mood amid recent high-profile setbacks faced by train operator SMRT.

In a post on his Facebook page, Khaw said he felt “like 70 after the recent trains’ incidents”.

Adding a sad emoji in the post, he said, “I had looked forward to year end this year, with (Changi Airport) Terminal 4, DTL3 (Downtown Line 3) and successful re-election to the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) Council. But it was not to be.”

Last month, Khaw slammed SMRT for the tunnel flooding incident at Bishan that caused a long breakdown on a part of the North-South Line and apologised for a train collision at Joo Koon station that injured 38 people.

Khaw, who is also Sembawang GRC MP, said in the post that “no problem cannot be overcome” while thanking colleagues, grassroots leaders and others for their birthday wishes.

“In life, we try our best and do what we can but the final outcome is sometimes beyond us. Key is to persevere and press on, knowing that the cause is just and good should eventually prevail,” he said.
