Legendary American sportswriter Frank Deford

Legendary American sportswriter Frank Deford has died at the age of 78, in Key West, Florida.

News that Deford had died on Sunday was confirmed by his wife to the Washington Post earlier today (May 29).

The veteran Sports Illustrated writer commenced his long career at the magazine in 1962, but then went on to work in TV and radio, and was also recognised as a prolific and widely admired novelist.

Deford was also a member of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame, and was named Sportswriter of the Year six times. He was the recipient of both an Emmy and a George Foster Peabody Award.
