Lesser-known brands reveal mobile tech for aging and cost-conscious consumers at CTIA Wireless

In the past CTIA Wireless has been home to big-name debuts and mobile technology unveilings including the Galaxy S, the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Thrill 4G, but this year lesser-known brands are expected to steal the spotlight.

CTIA will host more than 1,000 exhibitors and over 40,000 spectators in 2012. The show covers wireless and converged communications, wireless broadband, mobile web computing and data industries, and in 2012 the focus is on "All things mobile."

New brands such as Plum Mobile and Unnecto are gearing up to show off new handsets at the event for the first time.

Unnecto said it will debut its “line of stylish, affordable, and high-functioning GSM cell phones” at CTIA Wireless while Plum Mobile will unveil 8 to 10 new Android devices, including smartphones and tablets.

Europe’s number one senior mobile manufacturer Doro will introduce the world’s first Android smartphone for seniors at CTIA Wireless, a device called the Doro PhoneEasy 740.

The “Doro PhoneEasy 740 is more than just big buttons, a loud sound and large fonts,” said Doro of its brand new smartphone. “It is brilliantly simple in handling the world’s easiest Smartphone from the leading manufacturer of easy mobile phones. The Doro Experience software makes the experience easier for seniors, who are attracted to technology for keeping in touch with relatives, maintaining social interaction and monitoring their conditions. Doro has even skinned the Facebook App to make it more manageable for seniors.”

HTC, Huawei, Kyocera, LG and ZTE will all be on the showroom floor at CTIA Wireless but there won’t be any high-powered, record-breaking smartphones from major mobile device manufacturers such as Motorola, Research In Motion, Samsung and Nokia -- some of which have chosen not to exhibit at this year’s event -- causing some industry insiders to dub this year’s show as “uneventful.”

However, CTIA Wireless is not just about hardware. A long list of companies are getting ready to demo the latest in enterprise solutions, energy-saving products, and emerging mobile entertainment technology too. While Mobile World Congress puts the emphasis on consumer devices, CTIA is all about the technologies that power them, including Location Based Services (LBS), Smart Energy, Wireless Health, Intelligent Transportation, Cloud Computing and Mobile Money.

The 27th edition of CTIA Wireless runs May 8-10 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
