As the Christmas jingles give way to the gongs of the Chinese New Year songs, it's a sure sign that the holiday season is moving ahead into a brand new 2024. Maybe you've yet to pack away your Christmas tree, but it's almost time put away your Mariah Carey and finalise your Whamageddon scores.

The Chinese New Year arrives on 10 February 2024, which means it's again already time to start looking at Li Chun. Signifying the beginning of Spring and based on the Chinese solar calendar, Li Chun will fall on 4 February 2024, starting at 4.37pm.

A popular Li Chun tradition in Asia is to deposit money into your bank account, as this signifies money coming for the whole year ahead.

But you can't just deposit money at any timing — depending on your Chinese zodiac animal, fengshui masters and astrologists will tell you that there's a fixed time period that is the most auspicious for you. Also, noting that 2024's Li Chun starts later on 4 February, the timings extend way into 5 February.

If you'd like to take it to the next level, each time slot also has its own auspicious colours to wear while making the deposit. Of course, not everyone agrees on Li Chun having any impact on your financial health for the year, but many still partake in the tradition. After all, the GST increase to 9 per cent in 2024 is very real.

Best timings, according to your Chinese zodiac

According to Way Fengshui, 2024's forecast makes 11am to 1pm on 5 February the best time to deposit money for all zodiacs, except those born in Ox, Snake, Monkey and Rooster years.

In addition to 11am to 1pm on 5 February, some zodiacs still have two other "good" periods for depositing money, with the Pig getting three, while the Rat, and Tiger only have one additional period. Unfortunately, for the Snake and the Monkey, due to the fact that the 11am to 1pm on 5 February is not considered auspicious for them, they only have one period during Li Chun to deposit their money.

  • 4 Feb 2024 5pm to 7pm - Ox, Dragon, Snake

  • 4 Feb 2024 9pm to 11pm - Tiger, Rabbit, Goat

  • 4 Feb 2024 11pm to 1am (5 Feb) - Ox, Dragon, Monkey

  • 5 Feb 2024 3am to 5am - Horse, Dog, Pig

  • 5 Feb 2024 5am to 7am - Goat, Dog, Pig

  • 5 Feb 2024 7am to 9am - Rat. Monkey, Rooster

  • 5 Feb 2024 11am to 1pm - All except Ox, Snake, Monkey, Rooster

  • 5 Feb 2024 1pm to 3pm - Dragon, Horse, Pig

Take note, though, there are also some timings which you shouldn't be queuing to put money into your account — 7pm to 9pm on 4 February, as well as 1am to 3am and 9am to 11am on 5 February, as these are considered inauspicious periods.

So, what happens if you really can't spare the time to queue at your nearest cash deposit machine? Well, depositing money via online banking or getting a friend to transfer money to you is also supposed to count.

That said, if tradition is not for you, don't worry. You're not alone, and there are many others in the younger generation who have their own opinions about traditions for the Chinese New Year.
