Local designers to look out for at the 2017 Singapore Fashion Week
Fashionistas, get ready for the return of the annual Singapore Fashion Week (SGFW).
Happening from 26 to 28 October at the National Gallery, the three-day event will feature a collection by celebrity designer Jason Wu, as well as those from modest fashion designers such as Jovian Mandagie and Dian Pelangi.
Apart from these big names, watch out for these Singaporean designers and brands that will also be showing at the event.
Lai Chan
Singaporean fashion designer Lai Chan, who will be the first Singaporean designer to opening for SGFW, is best known for his beautiful designs of the cheongsam, or qipao.
He opened his eponymous boutique LAICHAN at the Raffles Hotel Arcade in 1991, and currently has a store at The Paragon shopping center.
Lai believes in creating ‘beautiful, comfortable and timeless fashion designs that bring out the style in every woman’ by combining traditional dress-making techniques with modern style influences.
His work on the figure-flattering Chinese dress has led him to be dubbed as ‘the grand master of the cheongsam’, and some of his designs have made appearances in theatres and and films such as “Romeo + Juliet”, “Shakespeare in the Park”, and HBO’s telemovie, “Grace”.
Gin Lee
Born and raised in Singapore, Gin Lee initially established her womenswear brand in 2011 in Israel when she moved there with her husband.
Her independent fashion label GINLEE focuses on clean, modern designs that have relaxed yet flattering silhouettes for women to work and dance in.
Last year, Lee was awarded the Emerging Designer of the Year at the Singapore Fashion Awards.
Goh Ling Ling
Goh Ling Ling is the brains behind Singapore-based brand, LING WU, which is known for crafting luxurious handbags in soft leather and exotic skins.
The stylish mother of three believes that “a great bag should never live within the confines of the latest trend, but should live with purpose as a close and honest friend to whoever owns it”.
Goh will be making her debut at this year’s SGFW, where she will be showcasing her signature exotic skin bag collection alongside GINLEE in a two-segment show.
Several up-and-coming designers will be showcasing their collections at SGFW in a multi-label show as part of FASHION FUTURES, a mentoring and development programme that supports the next generation of Singapore fashion designers.
Arissa Cheo
Singaporean socialite and fashion entrepreneur Arissa Cheo launched her fashion line ARISSA X at the SGFW 2016, and will be making a return to this year’s show with her second line of ready-to-wear items.
While her first collection leaned towards the 90s favourites – crop tops, combat boots, chokers, her second collection will have a ‘darker, more womanly aesthetic with slight lolita-esque elements’.
Yoyo Cao
Yoyo Cao or @yoyokulala as she is known on Instagram, is one of Singapore’s biggest social media stars. She launched her clothing label Exhibit in 2010, and followed with her first runway collection at SGFW in 2014 with Charles & Keith. We expect to see lots of trendy items in totally Insta-worthy #OOTDs.
Phuay Li Ying, the founder and designer of Ying The Label, uses her love for water colour painting to translate her inspirations and thoughts into abstract art prints and patterns for her clothing designs.
These wearable art pieces that combine fashion and art will be taking the stage at SGFW as part of her collection, “Beyond Horizons”.
Matthew Gideon, Singaporean designer and founder of menswear label DEBONEIRE, will present the brand’s Cruise 2017 Collection, consisting of cocktail suits and evening jackets made of silk, cotton and linen.
He founded DEBONEIRE in 2015 when he was 22 years old and fresh out of the army. These days, the label is known for its printed suits, each one promising to be an impeccable fit.
Michelle Chan, owner and founder of Singapore womenswear label WEEKEND SUNDRIES, is set to showcase a capsule collection titled “Soft Lights on a Balmy Night”.
Since launching the brand in 2012, Chan has focused on creating garments that centre on simple details, soft cuts, and comfort that are “for unfettered living in this perennial humid summer”.
