The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Tuesday (29 January) that the 70kmh speed limit for eight-seater passenger cars will be lifted on Friday. The cars will instead observe the same road speed limits as other passenger cars.

LTA said in a news release, “Given advancements in vehicle safety standards, LTA will remove the vehicle speed limit for eight-seater passenger cars from 1 February.

“With this change, eight-seater passenger cars will only be required to observe the same road speed limits as other passenger cars. This is in line with the practice in other countries.”

Six-month trial to raise speed limits for mobile cranes

The authority will also start a six-month trial to increase vehicle speed limits for mobile cranes on Friday.

It said, “In view of industry feedback and to minimise driver fatigue, we will also on 1 February, commence a six-month trial to increase vehicle speed limits for mobile cranes with laden weight exceeding 24,000kg to 40kmh.”

Currently, mobile cranes with a laden weight exceeding 24,000kg have a speed limit of 20kmh.

During the trial, all mobile cranes will observe the road speed limit or the vehicle speed limit of 40kmh, whichever is lower.

LTA said, “This decision takes into account improvements in vehicle technology and design that allow mobile cranes to travel safely at higher speeds, and is also in line with practice in other countries such as Australia, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.”
