A majority of Chinese consumers plan to buy a smartwatch this year

Many Chinese consumers are hoping to get their hands on a smartwatch in 2016, like this Gear S2 by Samsung

Smartwatch sales could see a rise in China in the coming months, after a survey by ABI Research found that nearly 67 respondents planned to buy the device in 2016.

The increase in desire was linked to the generous number of smartwatch choices on the market, in addition to the design options, affordability and comprehensive features they offered.

For some, having a smartwatch -- an Apple Watch in particular -- was seen as a status symbol. And according to the survey, looks rated higher in importance than audio or video capabilities.

Forty-two percent of respondents said they would spend between $150 and $300 on a smartwatch, while 22 percent could spend more than $310. The average price of a smartwatch in China is around $166.
