A 28-year-old Malaysian man’s attempt to smuggle over 5,000 sachets of chewing tobacco was thwarted at Woodlands Checkpoint on Thursday afternoon (20 December).

The man, who was driving a Malaysia-registered car, was stopped by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers for further checks at around 3pm on Thursday, said the ICA in a Facebook post on Friday.

5,055 sachets of chewing tobacco were then found hidden in man’s car dashboard, side panels, floorboard and car seat, the authority added.

The case was later referred to the Health Sciences Authority.

“The ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands,” said the ICA.
