The man who allegedly robbed a Shell petrol station in broad daylight with a knife was charged in court on Wednesday (1 August).

Singaporean Visvanathan Vadivelu, 48, was charged with one count of robbing Sia Siew Bee, a cashier at a Shell petrol station located at 219 Upper Bukit Timah Road, with a kitchen knife at around 12.50pm on Monday.

Visvanathan allegedly made off with $1,193 in cash after he demanded that Sia, 22, place the money from the cash register in a plastic bag.

Another Shell employee called the police after the man took off on a scooter.

A customer also followed the suspect on the road for a short distance and called the police.

Visvanathan was arrested on the same day at about 4.50pm along Jurong East Street 21.

According to the police, Visvanathan donned a motorcycle helmet but Sia remembered details such as the colours of his clothes.

Visvanathan is unrepresented and will next appear in court on 8 August 2017. If found guilty, he faces a jail term of between two and ten years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
