Arsenal’s heavy defeat to Chelsea allowed Manchester City to move top of the Women's Super League, albeit by a single goal with both sides locked on 33 points.

Ellen White took 34 seconds to get the first of City’s two goals in their win over Birmingham City, before Jill Scott turned provider for a second time for Keira Walsh to strike from distance.

Liverpool managed their first league win of the season away at relegation rivals Bristol City, in front of 1,007.

A goal from January signing Rachel Furness moves the Reds off the bottom of the table, City missing a chance to level when Charlie Wellings’ spot-kick was saved. Both sides hit the woodwork in a game replete with chances.

Manchester United despatched Tottenham Hotspur but it took them until the second half to break the deadlock. Two goals in seven minutes, Katie Zelem from the spot and Jess Sigsworth from a corner, put them ahead before Zelem added their third three minutes from time. Ella Toone was dismissed amid a scuffle in added time.

Everton kept pace with United - both have 18 points - via their 3-1 defeat of Reading. A Chloe Kelly hat-trick after 65 minutes included a goal from a corner to secure their first win in four league games.

A Fara Williams penalty had drawn Reading level on 31 minutes, following Angharad James’ foul on Megan Finnigan, before Everton pulled away.

A late Alisha Lehmann double allowed West Ham to come from behind against Brighton and cancelled out Dutch international Danique Kerkdijk’s opener.
