SINGAPORE — A floor manager who discharged fireworks in Little India during the wee hours of Deepavali was fined $3,000 on Tuesday (31 December).

Sivasarvanan Suppiah Murugan, 43, admitted to one count of discharging dangerous fireworks. It is unclear where and when he acquired the fireworks.

On 26 October, at about 8.30pm, Sivasarvanan went to work at Lady Dream Club at Perak Road. He had bought a box of “Happy Boom” fireworks with the intention of using them to celebrate Deepavali.

The Singaporean then went to several clubs in Little India to drink with his friends. One of the pubs he frequented was Mohicans Pub along Madras Street. He then decided to set off the fireworks in front of the pub as he thought there were no cameras nearby.

Placing a carton of fireworks on the road at the T-junction of Madras Street and Campbell Lane, Sivasarvanan lit them up before fleeing into Campbell Lane. The fireworks discharged at about 12.35am on 27 October.

Minutes later, police officers who were deployed in Little India for the festivities heard the sound of fireworks and saw the lights shooting into the sky. When they arrived on the scene, they saw a carton of used fireworks. Sivasarvanan had left by then.

No injury or property damage were caused by the fireworks.

In mitigation, Sivasarvanan only asked to pay his fine in instalments. He will be paying $2,000 today, and the remaining amount at a later date.

For setting off fireworks, Sivasarvanan could have been jailed up to two years and/or fined between $2,000 and $10,000.
