So get this: a student at Douglas MacArthur High School in Texas graduated while wearing a stranger’s pants. Just three minutes before lining up for the ceremony, senior Leroy Solis Jr. was told that he wouldn’t be allowed to walk in jeans, without a tie. So, he got creative.
The soon-to-be graduate made his way back to his car, where he ran into someone of similar stature. From there, he explained that he needed slacks in order to take part in the ceremony, and the man immediately agreed to give Solis Jr. his own.
In a post on Facebook, the teen’s sister, Rosemary De Los Santos, explained how it all took place, while extending her tremendous gratitude.
To the guy who loan my brother his slacks yesterday to graduate THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! I got emotional today when my…
“I got emotional today when my brother told me he showed up to his graduation in jeans,” De Los Santos wrote. “The school Principal told him he wasn’t crossing the stage and sent him home.”
While most of the reactions to De Los Santos’ post agree with the principal’s lack of compassion, others are quick to point out that there was in fact a dress code in place. In a newsletter sent out to parents by Principal Pete Martinez, he reminded seniors about graduation expectations, and the consequences of ignoring them.
“Failure to comply can result in not being allowed to participate in the ceremony or removal from the ceremony,” the newsletter read.
De Los Santos spoke with KSAT.com, saying she knew about the dress code, but that her brother decided to ignore it as to not burden their single father with extra clothing costs. Instead, he figured the graduation gown would serve as a cover-up.
Thanks to the generosity of the man with the slacks – as well as a $10 tie he bought in the school parking lot – Solis Jr. was able to walk with his fellow grads. And he’s deeply appreciative.
“THANK YOU THANKYOU!!” De Los Santos’ post read. “Please share this post. I want [to] find out who these very kind and generous people are.”
