She was sleeping with her boyfriend on a bench outside Marina Bay Sands (MBS) when she was woken up by a hand that was touching her underneath her shorts.

When the 29-year-old Filipino maid found that her Bangladeshi boyfriend was still fast asleep with his arms around her, she looked up and noticed another man walking away.

The man, Hosan Daluar, a 29-year-old Bangladeshi, fled when the maid’s boyfriend shouted at him to stop.

Daluar was sentenced to eight months’ jail and three strokes of the cane on Wednesday (1 August) after he pleaded guilty to one count of using criminal force to molest the woman. The foreign worker was awaiting the resolution of his workman injury claim in Singapore when he committed the offence.

Investigations showed that Daluar entered the MBS casino around 12am on 27 May this year. As Daluar was sitting close to various women but not gambling, he caught the eye of Teo Mui Boon, the senior security manager with MBS. Teo and a colleague of his decided to follow Daluar.

Daluar left the casino at about 3am and walked to the bay front outside MBS where he saw the victim and her boyfriend sleeping on the bench. The woman had her jacket over her head while her boyfriend was asleep with his arms around her belly. At the time, Teo was nearby and noticed Daluar was seated closely next to the victim on the bench.

Daluar then inserted his hand into the woman’s shorts to touch her. The woman and her boyfriend woke up and shouted at Daluar, causing him to flee. Teo and his colleague pursued Daluar and managed to detain him.

The police were notified of the incident.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Nicholas Lai sought eight months and three strokes for Daluar, whom he said had exploited the victim’s vulnerability as she was asleep and could not protect herself.

Daluar, who was unrepresented, told the court he had nothing to say in his defence.

For his offence, Daluar could have been jailed up to two years and/or fined and/or caned.
