SINGAPORE — A 31-year-old man was jailed for 24 weeks at the State Courts on Tuesday (10 December) for having paid sex with two 16-year-old girls some years ago.

Mohammad Yunus Sakdun was also fined $6,000 for having 12 pornographic films on his mobile phone.

He pleaded guilty to three charges of commercial sex with a person under 18 and one count of possession of obscene films.

Four other charges of commercial sex with a minor and one count of having a film without a valid certificate were considered in sentencing.

Victims advertised services online

Both victims had advertised their sexual services via online platform ‘Alamak Chat’ in 2012 and 2013, when they were 16. They needed money and did not want to burden their respective families financially, the court heard.

Yunus, who was then between 25 and 26, knew that it was an offence to pay a minor for sex. But he didn’t check the girls’ identity cards when he paid for their services.

Between June 2012 and March 2014, he paid the girls between $60 and $100 for oral sex at staircase landings at HDB blocks in Balam Road, Redhill Lane and Henderson Road.

Yunus’ crimes came to light when he was investigated for attempted extortion after someone made a police report against him on 5 April last year. The court was not told about the details of the report or the person who made it.

Yunus’ handphone was also found to contain one film without a valid certificate and 12 pornographic films.

The maximum punishment for commercial sex with a person under 18 is up to seven years’ jail along with a fine.

For having obscene films, the maximum penalty is a fine of up to $20,000 and up to six months’ jail.
