SINGAPORE — Angered that his girlfriend of less than two months had cheated on him, a man threatened to make her a “famous nude model”.

The 31-year-old then created a Facebook account with his former lover’s name and sent her nude photos to her friends.

The interior designer was jailed for 10 weeks on Monday (8 July) after he pleaded guilty to two counts of transmitting three obscene photos to two friends of his 29-year-old ex-girlfriend via electronic means. Another three counts of the same offence, sent to three others, were taken into consideration for sentencing.

Both the man and the woman, who is a Thai national, cannot be named to protect the latter’s identity.

The pair met online and later entered into a long distance relationship. The man had travelled to Thailand to meet her.

While apart, the two engaged in video calls during which the man would request to see his girlfriend’s naked body and she agreed to it. On three such video calls in January this year, the man took screenshots of the woman’s naked body without her knowledge. He kept the images in his mobile phone for his own viewing.

The relationship unravelled in February after the man suspected that he was being cheated on. The two broke up that month. The man was angry as he had been serious about the relationship.

On 20 February, the man told the victim over messaging that since she liked being a model, he would make her a “famous nude model”, Deputy Public Prosecutor Asik Sadayan told the court.

The man created a Facebook account with the woman’s name in the profile. On the same day, he sent three obscene images of the woman to five of her friends with the intention of humiliating her.

In mitigation, the man’s lawyer Emily Koh said that the couple were dating seriously and had plans to get married. They even viewed houses in Thailand and the man had helped the woman financially.

The man was “devastated, emotional and angry” at the woman’s infidelity, but is now remorseful for his actions, said Koh. He was the sole breadwinner supporting his parents and a son from a previous marriage, she added.

The images were shared with “a small scale” of the woman’s friends and not made public, Koh pointed out.

In sentencing the man, District Judge Jasvender Kaur said that the man’s violation of the victim’s privacy was “significant”.

For transmitting an obscene image through electronic means, the man could have been jailed up to three months and/or fined on each count.
