SINGAPORE — A 22-year-old man suspected of killing two older women in a Commonwealth Avenue flat has been charged with the murder of one of the victims, who is believed to be his mother.

According to local media reports, Gabriel Lien Goh was handed a holding charge on Monday (28 October) for allegedly killing 56-year-old Lee Soh Mui at Block 7A Commonwealth Avenue early on Sunday night.

A TODAY report said that Lee is understood to be the accused’s mother, while the other victim – a 90-year-old woman – is believed to be his grandmother.

Appearing in court, Goh’s face showed cuts and bruises, while his right hand was also visibly swollen. Goh will be warded at Changi General Hospital for three weeks to undergo psychiatric assessment and is scheduled to appear in court again on 18 November.

If convicted of murder, Goh faces the death penalty.

In an earlier news release, the police said they were alerted to a case of two unnatural deaths at the Commonwealth Avenue block. Both victims were found lying motionless in the seventh-floor unit and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police added that both women are related to Goh, who was subsequently arrested. A Straits Times report cited witnesses saying that Goh attacked members of the public at the block’s ground floor prior to his arrest.

The case was the second instance of an alleged murder that took place on Sunday. Also charged for murder on Monday was 54-year-old Chinese national Wang Shuzhen, who is believed to have killed 63-year-old Teh Hock Pine in a third-floor unit of Block 633 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6.
