Man Suspected of Murdering Surfers in Mexico Told Girlfriend He 'Killed' 3 Men, Court Hears

The man charged over the disappearance of three surfers found dead in Mexico reportedly told his girlfriend he was involved with their murders.

Jake Robinson, 30, from Perth, Australia, his older brother Callum Robinson, 33, who’d moved from his native Australia to San Diego, and their friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, also of San Diego, were last seen on April 27 while they were surfing and camping along the Mexican coast, south of Ensenada.

PEOPLE previously reported that authorities searching for the missing men found their three bodies at the bottom of 50 feet well in a desolate section of Santo Tomas, Baja California, on May 3. All three had suffered gunshot wounds.

On Wednesday, May 8, a Mexican judge heard in court that Jesús Gerardo, 33 — identified only by his first and middle names due to the country's law — told his girlfriend he had attacked "three gringos," outlets including the San Diego Union-Tribune, the BBC, and the Independent reported.

According to the BBC, when she questioned what he meant, he said: "I killed them."

The suspect has been charged with forced disappearance but is expected to be faced with murder charges soon, per the outlets.

His girlfriend, only known as Ari Gisel, 23, and another man have been detained for their suspected involvement, the BBC reported. Ari has not been charged, but spoke as a witness in a statement read out in court.

Per the San Diego Union-Tribune, Ari told investigators that her partner committed the crime over the tires on the victims' Chevrolet.

The suspect's girlfriend was detained last week after police found she had a cellphone believed to belong to one of the victims, the outlet reported. She claimed her partner took her Ford Ranger pickup on April 27, before then returning with the victims' car.

The outlet reported that Ari said the suspect told her he had “f---ed up three gringos," and told her it was because “they had a lot of money, devices, and the pickup.”

Ari claimed her partner said he was going to “get rid of the pickup to Santo Tomás,” which is the area the victims' vehicle was later discovered burned without tires.

He reportedly gave the tires to Ari, and told her, “Look what I brought you,” the outlet stated.

Constitutional Governor of the State of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, didn't immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE.

Earlier this week, Jake and Callum's distraught parents made their first public statement following their sons' death. "The world has become a darker place for us," their mother Debra Robinson said, per the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"We also mourn the loss of [Jack] Carter Rhoad, a close friend. They were young men enjoying their passion of surfing together," she added.
