SINGAPORE — For over a year, a bank relationship manager took 21 upskirt videos at various locations around Singapore, including nine recordings at a university campus.

Calvin Ng Wei Ming, 28, was caught red-handed while taking a video at Mapletree Business City in Pasir Panjang Road on 30 March 2015.

At the State Courts on Monday (29 April), he was jailed for 12 weeks after he pleaded guilty to five charges of insulting the modesty of a woman.

He admitted to 16 counts of the same crime and one charge of possessing obscene films, all of which were taken into consideration for his sentencing.

Took videos at various locations

The first upskirt video Ng took was on 1 April 2014 at UOB Plaza in Raffles Place.

On 5 August 2014, while riding the escalator at the then Singapore Institute of Management University (UniSIM) in Clementi, Ng spotted an unknown woman in a skirt.

He activated the video recording function on his mobile phone and positioned it underneath the victim’s skirt. The recording lasted 10 seconds.

On 2 September, Ng recorded another video lasting 11 seconds at the exact same location. Later that day, Ng made another recording at Tiong Bahru MRT station.

The next day, Ng took another upskirt video at the same SIM escalator. This recording lasted 24 seconds.

Two weeks later, on 17 September, Ng took an upskirt video lasting 16 seconds on the same SIM escalator. The next day, he took another such video at HabourFront MRT station.

He also took an upskirt video aboard a public bus on 5 November 2014.

Caught red-handed

On 30 March 2015, Ng was walking up the staircase at the Alexandra Retail Centre heading in the direction of Mapletree Business City.

A witness spotted Ng pointing his mobile phone towards a woman in front of him who was wearing a dress. The witness grabbed Ng’s arm and asked him to hand over his phone.

The witness checked the phone and found a four-second recording of the victim’s inner thighs and called the police.

Ng later admitted to his crimes. A total of 95 obscene films across four devices – his mobile phone, tablet, computer and external hard drive – were found in his possession.

Ng, who is married and has a baby daughter, will begin his prison sentence on 2 May.

For each of his charges for insulting the modesty of a woman, Ng could have been jailed up to one year, along with a fine. For possessing obscene films, he could have been fined up to $20,000 along with up to six months’ jail.
