Man trapped under lorry rescued by 30 passers-by

One by one, they came, responding to the cries for help. The man was pinned under a lorry and screaming in pain, and several passers-by started tilting the lorry. More and more people came to help, till about 30 people successfully rescued the victim.

According to The Straits Times, the incident took place yesterday at the junction of Bendemeer Road and Boon Keng Road. Mr Foo Suan Wang, who works nearby, captured the incident on video and posted it on Facebook. It has since been viewed more than 256,000 times and shared almost 5,000 times.

At the time of the incident, Mr Foo heard a loud scream from his office on the sixth level of the Hyflux Innovation Centre. He also saw the lorry driver come out of his vehicle.

He said, "I did not know there was someone pinned under because I could not see anyone. I thought someone was hit and lying on the other side, but later realised he was under."

"Suddenly many people just came to try to lift the truck. Everyone spontaneously joined in and there was no need to tell them."

Mr Foo added, "You don't see this every day where people from all walks of life come to help."

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the incident at around 11:50am. The man, who is in his 20s, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital with a leg fracture.

There have been similar incidents abroad. Last August, The Guardian reported that a man who fell into the gap between train and platform in Perth was rescued by fellow passengers who lifted the carriage off him. And in April, commuters in Moscow rescued a 70-year-old woman who had been trapped between train and platform, reported The Telegraph.
