SINGAPORE — He dated a woman whom he met online even though he was already attached.

After the relationship ended, the man demanded that the woman resolve the relationship dispute between him and his girlfriend. When she failed to do so, he uploaded her nude photos onto Tumblr.

The 26-year-old man was jailed 10 weeks on Monday (7 October) after he pleaded guilty to one count of criminal intimidation and one count of transmitting obscene photographs by electronic means. A charge of possessing 10 obscene films, a breach under the Films Act, was taken into consideration for his sentencing.

The freelance deliveryman and the woman, who is 24, cannot be named to protect the latter’s identity.

The details of how the man, who was unrepresented, had wanted the woman to resolve the dispute were not stated in court documents.

The two met around June 2017 through an online website. They began dating and were intimate. During their relationship, the man took photos and videos of the woman’s nude body with her consent. The woman also sent him photos of her breasts at his request.

While the woman regarded the man as her boyfriend, she later discovered that the man was attached to another woman. She broke off the relationship early last year.

On 1 November last year, the man messaged the woman on WhatsApp to tell her that she was the cause of a dispute between him and his girlfriend. The woman apologised but said that there was nothing she could do to help him.

Upset, the man threatened to upload her nude photographs onto Tumblr if the woman did not help resolve the dispute. He told the woman, “Good luck with your dignity” and “I’m destroying you again”.

Feeling stressed and afraid, the woman pleaded with the man to delete the photographs but was ignored, Deputy Public Prosecutor Marissa Chok told the court.

That afternoon, the man uploaded three photographs of the woman’s body onto his Tumblr page, which was accessible to the public. He typed the caption, “want to know her, DM (direct message)”.

Upon discovering that her nude photographs had been uploaded, the woman lodged a police report. She informed the police about the man’s threat if she did not “make things right” between him and his girlfriend, and about her nude photos uploaded by him on Tumblr.

The man admitted to the offences when investigated.

Asked if he had anything to say in mitigation, the man said, “I regretted my actions”.
