Marco Pierre White Gets a New Cooking Show
Do we really need another cooking show on TV? One would have thought that there is already plenty of kitchen-focused entertainment circulating in the media – ranking from silly cooking game shows t0 how-to cooking tips. However, the latest food TV might bring something new to the table. At least it promises nothing revolutionary – which is always a good start.
The two main ingredients will surely though get the most attention – celebrity chef Marco Pierre White and model Melanie Skyes. Considering this line-up, the show could easily be called: “The Beauty and the Beast”. However, the producers opted for the more conservative choice of “Humble Pie”, which seems highly ironic to me.
For all those who know or have heard anything about Marco Pierre White will definitely not associate him with the phrase ‘humble pie’. Being the personification of a celebrity chef, Mr. White is also known for his contribution to the British cuisine. Furthermore, he is also the youngest chef ever to have received three Michelin Stars. The Enfant Terrible, as he is also known, has by the way trained Gordon Ramsey – just for your reference. If you know anything about the world of chefs, then you know him.
The New Show
It was announced earlier this month that Marco Pierre White and Melanie Skyes will host and judge the new show Humble Pie. Like other food shows on TV, this one will also be a contest series. Humble Pie is dubbed by its producers as a show where poker meets food.
“The gastronomic poker”, as Marco Pierre White refers to it in the trailer, features four candidates in each of the eight planned episodes. None of the contestants will be a professional cook though. All are competing for the cash prize of £2,500 (S$5400). Mr. Enfant Terrible has of course the very last word about who will go home with the money. However, the amateur chefs have to judge each other after every round as well.

Food Poker?
But here comes the poker element into the game. Before Marco Pierre White slams down his final word, each contender has the change to ‘cash out’ on the current round. The one with the worst rating in that particular round will be eliminated – unless he takes the money and runs. Just like in a poker game, each contestant takes the risk of advancing with some cash or going home empty handed. The show will premiere in the UK on October 16.
Marco Pierre White is not unfamiliar with TV. His own memoir has even been turned into a movie recently. He also has been co-hosting the famous food series MasterChef Australia: The Professionals. His new show Humble Pie will probably not go into the culinary history books, but at least it is not pretending to do so.
What we can expect though is entertainment. Humble Pie makes an impression of not taking itself too seriously – which would be hard to do if you call your show a food poker. While Marco Pierre White will do the judging, Melanie Skyes will take care of the hosting. What her culinary contribution will be remains to be seen.
