Marvel meets “Overwatch”: New superhero shooter game “Marvel Rivals” officially revealed

See Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, and more Marvel super stars duke it out in the announcement trailer for NetEase Games' next title.

Marvel is giving fans its own version of Overwatch.

Reports leaked in the previous weeks about a title named Marvel Rivals set up at gaming studio NetEase Games. Some rumors suggested it could be a first-person shooter, while others reported it'd be a third-person shooter in the vein of Overwatch. On Wednesday, Marvel Games officially unveiled the release, along with an initial trailer and gameplay images that confirm it's the latter.

Marvel Rivals is a third-person team-based PvP shooter that lets players assemble an all-star squad of six superheroes and/or villains to fight against another six-person team across a series of battlefields from the Marvel multiverse, including Thor's home of Asgard and Tokyo in the year 2099.

The game's main storyline, crafted by the NetEase writing team, follows a clash between the tyrannical dictator Doctor Doom and his future counterpart from 2099. Countless universes collided in the Timestream Entanglement as a result, creating new worlds and crises. Heroes and villains from across the multiverse must fight together — and against one another — as disparate groups seek to defeat both Dooms before one achieves domination of these realities.

Some of the playable characters, each with their own unique power sets, are spotted in the trailer, specifically Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Hulk, Iron Man, Loki, Luna Snow, Magik, Magneto, Mantis, Namor, Peni Parker, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Storm, Star-Lord, and Punisher.

Marvel Rivals is one of our most ambitious game development projects," Haluk Mentes, head of Marvel Games, said in a statement. "Since the conceptualization of the game and throughout our collaboration, our Marvel team has poured our hearts and souls into this project, and we are thrilled to work with the incredible team at NetEase Games to help deliver the ultimate superhero team-based PVP shooter."

Marvel Rivals is currently in development for PC. An Alpha Test is set for May that will allow players to access more than a dozen of the characters. Each seasonal drop will then introduce new heroes and villains, as well as maps to the battlefield.

“We are overjoyed to bring Marvel Rivals to players around the world," said game producer Stephen Wu. "We have always loved Marvel’s universe and its characters, and we are so excited to develop this game. This is the game we want to make, and we feel very lucky to be the team who made all of this come true.”

“NetEase Games is excited to collaborate with Marvel Games to deliver a thrilling, fast-paced cooperative gameplay experience featuring all of your favorite Super Heroes,” added Ethan Wang, Senior Vice President of NetEase, Inc. “This partnership with Marvel Games continues our commitment to build world-class development teams and reach global audiences with cutting edge experiences.”
