New Memoir By First Black Female Senator Carol Moseley Braun Coming Soon: ‘My Life Has Been Filled with Serendipity’
The memoir will cover several important moments from her life including her childhood, election into the U.S. Senate and becoming a U.S Ambassador

A new memoir by Carol Moseley Braun, the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate, is coming soon!
Hanover Square Press announced that the new book, written by Moseley Braun in collaboration with award-winning journalist Donna M. Owens, titled Trailblazer: Perseverance in Life and Politics, will cover the former Senator’s childhood to her rise in the Senate and work as an U.S. ambassador.
Moseley Braun's new book will detail her early life being raised by New Orleans jazz musicians and Alabama farmers “in post-World War II Chicago” as well as “her many firsts” when she entered politics in the 1970’s.
The memoir will also cover her career highlights, including earning the distinction of the first Black woman ever elected to the Senate when she served on the U.S. Senate from 1993 to 1999. She was also the first woman to represent the state of Illinois in Congress and the first Black woman to serve as a U.S Ambassador to New Zealand.

However, Moseley Braun noted that reaching those achievements wasn’t always easy. Her book will also get into the “obstacles, controversies and lessons learned” on her journey to Capitol Hill.
“In this memoir, Moseley Braun candidly shares the story of her extraordinary life in a fascinating narrative filled with poignant, powerful and sometimes funny stories,” a synopsis of the book read.
The former Senator also spotlights important memories in her new book, including how an “unusual encounter with a bird catapulted her into politics,” “filibustering against the Confederate Flag on the Senate floor” and running for president as “the lone woman in a field of men.”

Several human rights leaders will also be featured in the memoir, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with whom she had marched in support of equal rights, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela and Dr. Dorothy Height. She also details the friendships she’s made over the years with Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy.
Other topics include her “engagement during the civil rights, women’s and Black Power movements” and her “groundbreaking Senate campaign,” which had been backed by big names like Gloria Steinem, Maya Angelou and other celebrities at the time.
“My life has been filled with serendipity, adventure and adversity,” said Moseley Braun in a press release announcing the memoir. “Every experience has been anchored by my strong faith in God.”
Moseley Braun also previously worked as an Assistant United States Attorney, where she earned the Attorney General's Special Achievement Award, and has been featured on numerous broadcasts, podcasts and profiles. During her time in the Senate, she championed women’s health and civil rights, among other topics.
