Messi, Otamendi could miss Singapore friendly due to wedding commitments

UPDATE at 5:15pm: The Football Association of Singapore has issued a statement in response to media queries on Messi’s appearance.

Football superstar Lionel Messi who is currently in Australia with the Argentina national team may miss the friendly match against Singapore on 13 June at National Stadium due to his upcoming wedding on 30 June.

Argentina will face Brazil on Friday (9 June) in Melbourne.

A report in Spanish on Goal.com said it is likely that Jorge Sampaoli will release Messi to return to Barcelona as he prepares to tie the knot with partner Antonella Rocuzzo at the end of the month.

Centreback Nicolas Otamendi is in a similar situation, and will likely return to Buenos Aires to finalise preparations for his wedding. Otamendi ties the knot on 16 June.

On Thursday afternoon, the Football Association of Singapore responded with the following statement:

“The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and match promoter UNICESS are aware of the recent media stories around Lionel Messi and Nicolas Otamendi’s appearance in the Singapore Vs Argentina football match on Tuesday, 13 June at the Singapore Sports Hub.

“We are currently working with the AFA to determine the authenticity of the claims made in these reports and will provide an update as soon as we are able.”
