There’s a new fantasy world on the horizon for fans of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Ransom Riggs, who created the bestselling series, is publishing a new book in partnership with Dutton Books for Young Readers at Penguin Random House called SUNDERWORLD, VOL. I: The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry.

The book — which will be the first installment in a new fantasy series — will follow 17-year-old Leopold Berry as he discovers that the “cult show he is obsessed with” following his mother’s death has “begun to break through the reality of the city he calls home.” Berry ends up adventuring through the “unseen side of Los Angeles,” according to the book's synopsis.

The story will cover themes of “loss, triumph, friendship and magic” and seeks to remind readers that “true heroes are made, not born” and that sometimes you have to choose yourself, even if you’re not "the chosen one.”

“I’ve always been drawn to portal fantasies in fiction,” Ransom Riggs said in a release for the new book. “They feel like invitations to optimistic worlds where, ultimately, joy is possible, if only you can find the key. We’re living through some very heavy, very dark times—we have been for a while—and this story is meant to be an escape and a respite from darkness.”

In the book, Leopold begins to see hallucinations of weird things including “man who pops a tooth into a parking meter” and “a half-mechanical raccoon with its tail on fire,” which are from a so-called “cheesy” 1990s fantasy TV show called “Sunderworld.” He then turns to his best friend Emmet for help and they discover that there's more going on than meets the eye.

“Ransom Riggs is a storyteller like no other and with SUNDERWORLD, he invites readers into an adventure that is full of exhilarating twists and turns, moments of joy and despair and above all so much heart,” added Jennifer Loja, president of Penguin Young Readers, in the release.
