These are the five of the most expensive homes in India
The latest Knight Frank Wealth Report noted that there were 104 billionaires in India as of 2019. That’s more than double in five years when India was home to 56 billionaires. Mumbai is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the world. With per-square-feet rates being more than some of our single month’s salary, it also becomes an obvious choice for some of these billionaires to make this city their home. Of course, it helps that Mumbai is also the financial capital of the country which is convenient when you’re among the richest in the country. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some of the most expensive homes in India are located in the island city. Here are five, in no particular order:
Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat
Estimated to be worth Rs 200 crore, Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat isn’t just a home, it’s a landmark. The stunning property that overlooks the Arabian Sea was once called Villa Vienna before Shah Rukh bought it and renamed it. Aside from having different wings, one dedicated for Shah Rukh’s work meetings which also houses SRK memorabilia, Mannat is also said to have a zenana, a section meant exclusively for the women of the house. Rarely does a day go by when there isn’t a small crowd outside Mannat, waiting to catch a glimpse of their favourite superstar.
Mukesh Ambani’s Antilia
Named after a mythical island, Mukesh Ambani’s home in south Mumbai is as much of a landmark as Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat. The 27-storied house is also the most expensive home in the country and is said to have a salon, an ice-cream parlour, a movie theatre aside from the usual amenities like a pool, gym etc. Designed by Chicago-based architects Perkins and Will and constructed by the Australia-based construction company Leighton Holdings, Antilia is estimated to be worth Rs 10,000 crore.
Gautam Singhania’s JK House
Not very far from Antilia stands the Raymond bossman’s home. Spread over 16,000 square feet, JK House is the second tallest private building in India after Antilia. Aside from a residential space and an office space, JK House comes with the usual trappings – spa, pools, gym, helipad and the works. But the real pièce de résistance are the five floors of car park where Singhania parks some of his best and most expensive cars.
Kumar Mangalam Birla’s Jatia House
Spread over 30,000 sq feet surrounded by lawns and a pond, Kumar Mangalam Birla’s home is old-school luxury. The house is said to have 20 bedrooms with ceilings made from Burma Teak. It’s also said to have a central courtyard and a garden. Birla is said to have loved the house so much, he outbid five other prospective buyers and offered a little over Rs 42 crore as a token immediately. The house cost Birla a cool Rs 425 crore in 2015. This was just ten years after he had moved into a plush property on Altamount Road.
Anil Ambani’s Abode
He may have declared himself bankrupt but Anil Ambani’s home is not the kind you’d think would belong to a broke man. The spectacular building is spread over 16,000 square feet and is about 70 metres high. Not only does Abode have the usual features of a billionaire’s home – gym, pool, etc – it also comes with a helipad that Ambani is said to use every so often.
