"Mulan" boycott continues to grow
22 Aug – It seems that the #BoycottMulan protest has been gaining traction in other parts of the world, following its star Crystal Liu's decision to express her support for the Hong Kong Police and condemning the protesters of the now infamous extradition bill.
As reported on Epoch Times, the said boycott is now growing, with the hashtag trending on Twitter and internet memes of the said actress beginning to spread across the internet, including one of Crystal as Mulan wearing a gas mask with her sword spewing tear gas.
One netizen wrote, "Why would any young girl want her as a role model? Freedom loving people from across the world should give this movie a miss."
Another stated that Mulan is a heroine who stands against a society that tells her who she is supposed to be, but that Crystal instead supported Hong Kong police's brutality and alleged sexual assault against protesters.
Some are also criticising the actress for enjoying the freedom of being a naturalised US citizen while forcing Hong Kong people to make sacrifices.
The issue first sparked on 14 August, when the actress took to social media and shared the message, "I support Hong Kong's police, you can beat me up now. What a shame for Hong Kong."
The quote reportedly came from Global Times reporter, Fu Guohao, who was allegedly assaulted by protesters at the Hong Kong International Airport the day before.
Disney has remained silent so far.
