Museum manager expressed sadness over wax figure jokes

18 Aug - The Deputy General of Huaying Mountain Tourism Area, Zhang Yuehong, has recently expressed sadness over the recent infamy of its beloved wax museum.

According to Tencent Entertainment, the wax museum, known to be the third largest wax museum in China, recently became a laughing stock due to the horrible wax recreation of its celebrities.

Netizens are calling it a 'museum of horror' and the wax figures as 'ugly twins' of the celebrities it tried to sculpt, due to the horrendous wax work.

Zhang revealed, "The wax museum was launched in 2007 in line with the opening of the Huayingshan Guerillas Memorial Museum, which was mainly built to educate about patriotism."

Zhang stated that though the original wax figures in the museum were of the soldiers and people in the past, they decided to add celebrity wax figures as well to attract the attention of younger visitors.

He added that the wax figures are owned by Beijing wax museum curator Zhang Shouxiang, who leased it to the exhibition for free.

"We don't charge any admission fee to the public. It's not for commercial purposes," he said.

Therefore, he added, the comparison made to Madame Tussaud's is unfair to them.

As for Zhang Ziyi's statement saying that the wax figure was made without authorisation and her request for it to be taken down, Zhang said, "If they want it to be taken down, then it will be taken down."
