Nazri declares support for Anwar but insists won’t dump Umno
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz pledged support to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today but insisted he was not planning to abandon Umno.
The former minister made the unprompted declaration when asked to comment on Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir’s invitation for PAS lawmakers to join Pakatan Harapan.
Nazri said the invitation has nothing to do with him and he did not plan to cross over.
“I only support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as in me personally. Can’t those in Umno support him? He was my Youth chief,” says Nazri, in reference to Anwar’s position in Umno back in the early 1980s.
“There is nothing wrong with that. I will remain in Umno.”
The Padang Rengas MP has been hostile towards Barisan Nasional since the coalition appointed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as its chief advisor.
When asked how he would show his support towards Anwar, Nazri answered by being a member of the parliament caucus for reform and governance.
“If I don’t support him, I would not be in the caucus. I got the experience as a minister, [I was] in charge of parliament, so I want to do the best for Malaysia.
“And, Datuk Seri Anwar is a reformist,” he added.
The Padang Rengas MP had also called out Najib as a liar, over the latter’s statement that the previous comment made against business tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok was merely a point being raised that the BN government had contributed in one way or another to all Malaysian success stories.
“I was just supporting him don’t like, he knows that whatever he said I follow. I have always been a street fighter, that has been my kind of language,” Nazri said, reiterating that he had then defended Najib’s statement against Kuok.
“Yes, he [Najib] should speak the truth. I got nothing to do with Robert Kuok. You think I just woke up one morning and decided to whack?” Nazri quipped.
Earlier, Najib had said he had no reason to attack Kuok, as the latter was regarded as a long-time friend of his family.
Najib was reponding to Nazri’s claim after the former PM accused the latter of hurting BN components MCA’s popular support by publicly criticising Kuok.
