The National Environment Agency has found three shops along Beach Road that sold meat strips that were dried in front of air-conditioning compressors as well as along a corridor.

The agency said in a post on its Facebook page that after investigating feedback on the practice at Blocks 1 and 6 at Beach Road, it will take enforcement action against any shop operators for selling food not prepared in licensed premises.

It said, “It is an offence to offence to prepare food from any unlicensed food premises, and NEA will not hesitate to take enforcement action against anyone found violating the Food Hygiene Regulations.

“We would also like to remind members of the public not to purchase food prepared under poor hygiene conditions.”

Meant for making meat jerky

Chinese daily Shin Min Daily News reported on Sunday of this practice, which has been going on for at least the past year. These racks of meat were allegedly meant for making meat jerky for sale – both directly to customers from the “home manufacturer” and from a store at the nearby Golden Mile Complex.

The practice has led to residents complaining about the stench that came from the drying meat, as well as the meat attracting flies and birds.

NEA said that members of the public are encouraged to report any food hygiene related lapses they observed via the NEA website or the myENV app.
