Netflix has announced a new same-sex dating show titled The Boyfriend.

The streaming giant will premiere the Japanese series next month, beginning on July 9 and running for 10 episodes across four weeks.

The premise of the show takes nine men to a beach house where they live together and take turns working in a coffee truck. While there, they'll be looking for love, forming friendships, and learning about themselves along the way.

The trailer for the show shows our cast shot from behind, afar, or in silhouette, rather than introducing us to them properly just yet. We hear a lot of lines from the men talking about romance, while one of them questions why he was born this way.

Japan has a complicated relationship with the LGBTQ+ community, with same-sex marriage currently not legal in the country. In the law fast years alone, multiple courts have issued rulings on whether its exclusion is unconstitutional or not.

It looks like discussions about that will be featured in the show, as Kyodo Television's chief producer and director Hishida Keisuke said: "I discussed with the cast how growth and valuable experiences stem from shared friendships, youth and struggles, not just romance. This led to many unexpected miracles on set."

"We started out wanting to highlight the young men's friendships and personalities. Our focus wasn't just on romance but also on spending time together and experiencing personal growth," Netflix Japan's executive producer of live-action originals Dai Ota added.

The show is also set to feature appearances from Japanese celebrities Yoshimi Tokui, Megumi and Durian Lollobrigida, to name a few.

Meanwhile, following the conclusion of British LGBTQ+ dating show I Kissed a Girl, Dannii Minogue announced that I Kissed a Boy would be returning to BBC Three next year, with applications open now.

There have been plenty of great LGBTQ+ moments on TV this last year, and we've rounded up some of our favourites right here. Will The Boyfriend make our list for next year?

The Boyfriend premieres on Netflix on July 9.
