Netflix has released the first trailer for The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Aaron Sorkin's new film is based on the true story of seven activists who were charged with conspiracy and inciting to riot by the US government, after protests broke out during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

The protests, which were originally intended as peaceful, escalated as protesters clashed with police and the National Guard, and the organisers were arrested and later faced the now-infamous trial.

This first trailer features impressive shots both of the protests and scenes in the courtroom, alongside the repeated chants of "the whole world is watching".

The movie's all-star cast features the likes of Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Mark Rylance, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kelvin Harrison Jr, Frank Langella, William Hurt, Michael Keaton and John Carroll Lynch.

The Trial of the Chicago 7, comes from the mind of The Social Network and The West Wing's Sorkin, who penned the screenplay and is also directing, after Steven Spielberg had to step away from the project.

The film was slated for a September cinema release initially, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the film bypassed cinemas and is now heading straight for the streaming service.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 will be released on Netflix globally on October 16.
