In 2018, Sally Rooney's novel Normal People was released, earning praise from readers for its touching, nuanced depiction of what it means to be a young person forging their way in the world while also trying to find love under difficult circumstances. Now, the story is coming to our screens as the BBC has adapted it into a 12-part drama.

The series will air in 2020. Before you watch it, here's what you need to know...

Normal People: What's it about?

At the heart of the story are two young people - Connell and Marianne. The pair first enter each other's lives while at school and it's a connection that is tested but doesn't quite break as the years go on. The pair try to make their relationship work while also contending with the issues that have made them the people they are.

Speaking about the series, the BBC said:

"Normal People tracks the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in a small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College. At school, he’s well-liked and popular, while she’s lonely, proud and intimidating. But when Connell comes to pick up his mother from her cleaning job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers - one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world but Connell hangs at the side lines, shy and uncertain.

"Honest, smart and intoxicating, Normal People sees the pair weave in and out of each other’s lives and explores just how complicated intimacy and young love can be."
